South Bay Clean Power Asks Gardena to Join Their Neighbors

On Tuesday, August 12, South Bay Clean Power Working Group Chair, Joe Galliani, presented a presentation on the South Bay Clean Power initiative and publicly asked the City to pass the non-binding no cost resolution to participate in a CCA feasibility plan.  Gardena Council member Mark Henderson was kind enough to extend the invitation to share our information with his fellow City Council members and Mayor Paul Tanaka and here’s what we said.

West Hollywood Is Now 10th City To Unanimously Vote For Participation In South Bay Clean Power CCA Feasibility Study

Thanks to the decisive leadership and enthusiasm  of Mayor Linsay Horvath with support from Mayor Pro Tem, Lauren Meister, the WeHo City Council tonight became the 10th South Bay Clean Power target city to pass the resolution to participate in a CCA Feasibility Study.

The vote comes just weeks before the expected motion from the LA County Board of Supervisors to approve the CCA Task Force called for in the June 24, 2015 staff report.

The cities of Gardena, Malibu, Culver City and Inglewood are the next SBCP targets being asked to pass the non-binding, no cost resolution to be part of the feasibility study that will look at the viability of a Community Choice Power program for Los Angeles County cities who band together to aggregate their electrical use and form a non-profit JPA to procure their own energy from more renewable and local energy sources than the investor owned monopoly utility currently offers their citizens and businesses.

LA County Staff Report Recommends Community Choice Power Program to Los Angeles Board of Supervisors

On June 24 the County of Los Angeles Internal Services Department delivered the report requested by the Board of Supervisors at their March 17, 2015 meeting.  We at South Bay Clean Power are very pleased with the staff report and have high hopes for approval of the recommendations by the Supervisors.  You can click on the first page of the report below to download the complete report.   We are especially excited about our proposed role on the new County CCA Task Force as well as the proposed roles for the 9 cities who have passed our resolution to participate in a CCA feasibility study as well as our friends at USC and UCLA.  We can’t wait to get to work!     We want to thank the County staff for these excellent recommendations.

Talking with IBEW About Jobs, Job Training, and Union Installed Solar

South Bay Clean Power is looking to create a Sustainable Work Force Policy that brings local jobs, job training, workforce development and community benefits to our effort.  And we’re looking to partner with our brothers and sisters in the key unions in order to bring union quality workmanship and standards to the many megawatts of renewable energy our Community Choice Power program will develop and generate.

We see a great future in partnering with unions like the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) 11.  They cover LA County and they would be strong and valuable partners in the development and implementation of South Bay Clean Power’s Community Choice Power initiative.

So South Bay Clean Power has made a concerted and sincere effort to reach out to IBEW 11, led by our labor committee, headed by Dency Nelson, a career long union member. We’ve also had great help from Ken Smokoska, a pioneer in bringing Community Choice Power programs together with union workers over the years.

We know from this exciting video that IBEW 11 released recently that they are as excited about the local labor opportunities as we are. They’ve been preparing for the work ahead for a while now –

So we were very excited to meet with IBEW last Thursday at their magnificent Electrical Training Institute in the City of Commerce to talk about our progress with South Bay Clean Power and to explore how we might work together.   Read More

City of Lomita Votes to Become 9th City to Unanimously Pass Community Choice Power Resolution

IMG_0684

Thanks to the efforts of Lomita City Manager, Michael Rock, the City of Lomita has now become the ninth city to unanimously pass the resolution to participate in a Community Choice Power feasibility study.  Rock, the former City Manager of Fairfax, California in Marin County, was there when Marin launched its successful Marin Clean Energy program in 2010.  His experience and expertise with Community Choice makes him a valuable subject matter expert on the subject.

We met with each member of the Lomita City Council – Mayor Henry Sanchez, Jr., Council member James Gazeley, Council member Mark Waronek, Council member Michael Savidan and Council member Ben Traina, as well as Assistant City Manager, Gary Sugano and Public Works Tom Shahbazi  to brief them on our South Bay Clean Power efforts and answer their questions.

The other eight cities which have passed the feasibility study resolutions are Torrance, Carson, Redondo Beach, Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Beverly Hills and Palos Verdes Estates.
